Floor Debate Scheduled – Action Needed!

HB 2320 (Rep. Brenda Barton, LD-6), the AzCDL-requested bill which would exempt CCW permit holders from being disarmed when entering state and local government property unless every person entering is screened for weapons, is scheduled for a House Committee of the Whole (COW) hearing on Monday, March 2, 2015.

If you have not already done so, now is the time to tell your Representatives to support HB 2320 using AzCDL’s Legislative Action Center.

Bills Progressing

In other news, several pro-rights bills are progressing through the Legislature.

HB 2509 (Rep. Kelly Townsend, LD-16), the AzCDL-requested bill which would add to the definition of aggravated assault the taking, or attempted taking, of any legally possessed firearm (other than by law enforcement), passed out of the House and was sent to the Senate on February 24. It is scheduled for a hearing in the Senate Government Committee on Wednesday, March 4. AzCDL’s representatives will be present at the hearing and available to provide any necessary testimony.

HB 2527 (Rep. Anthony Kern, LD-20), the AzCDL-requested bill that would strengthen state firearms preemption by prohibiting local and state agency regulation of firearm transfers, passed out of the Senate Government Committee on February 25 by a 4-3 vote along party lines.

SB 1291 (Steve Smith, LD-11), which would allow for injunctions, fines and civil suits when political subdivisions (counties, cities, etc.) disregard state firearm preemption statues, passed out of the Senate and was sent to the House on February 25.
